Blaze no longer a major incident as firefighters thanked for 'unwavering' effort

25 August 2026
Source: The Hunts Post News
Category: News
Extracted Details: The fire at a Cambridgeshire nature reserve is no longer being treated as a major incident. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said today that national resilience crews have been stood down after supporting the response to the blaze at Holme Fen for the past fortnight. Firefighters will remain at the nature reserve while clearance work continues and crews monitor for hotspots in the peat, which can continue burning underground. The service is reducing its presence to two crews during the day and one overnight, with the level of response to be reviewed daily. The national resilience crews were stood down at Holme Fen, marking a significant milestone in the incident. Chief Fire Officer Matthew Warren and Deputy Chief Fire Officer Jon Anderson met the firefighters at lunchtime to thank them personally for all their hard work in supporting our response. (Image: Cambs Fire and Rescue) Chief Fire Officer Matthew Warren and Deputy Chief Fire Officer Jon Anderson met firefighters at the scene at lunchtime today (Monday) to personally thank them for their work. Mr Warren said the support from firefighters drafted in from other services across the country had been essential, both in tackling the fire and in keeping Cambridgeshire crews available for other emergencies. He said: β€œWe couldn’t have dealt with this fire and made the progress we have without the support of the national resilience and neighbouring services’ crews. β€œWithout their support over the last fortnight, we would h

WATCH: Holme Fen wildfire 'unprecedented' says Chief Fire Officer

20 August 2026
Source: The Hunts Post News
Category: News
Extracted Details: The Chief Fire Officer says that the wildfire at Holme Fen nature reserve in Cambridgeshire is "unprecedented". Matthew Warren, Chief Fire Officer at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue, speaking from Holme Fen today (August 20), said that crews could remain at the scene for a number of weeks. Matthew Warren, Chief Fire Officer (Image: Emily Stevens) A blaze broke out at Holme Fen on August 8 and continues to smoulder away, burning up to six metres below the surface deep in the peat. Fire crews from across the country have been on site assisting Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. Officer Warren said: "I've been with the service 23 years and this is unprecedented, in terms of the resources we have had to deploy, but also the longevity of the incident, because it is going to be ongoing for a few weeks yet. "Clearly we are going to need to have a presence here for a number of weeks to ensure that any hotspots that do materialise we can deal with at that moment in time. "I wouldn't want to put a time limit on it at this time." He added that Natural England will face quite a task to recover from the incident. Officer Warren said: "The nature of our summers now, they are obviously very dry and very hot, which exacerbate the chances of us actually having this type of incident. The blaze broke out at Holme Fen on August 8 (Image: Emily Stevens) "Clearly, I can't say we are going to safeguard against every incident in the future. "But it looks like we are going to get busier, the last

WATCH: Holme Fen firefighter saw 'huge flames' and '200 foot trees falling'

20 August 2026
Source: The Hunts Post News
Category: News
Extracted Details: A firefighter who has been tackling a wildfire at a nature reserve in Cambridgeshire for the past 12 days said he saw "huge flames" and "200 foot trees" falling around him. A blaze broke out at Holme Fen on August 8 and continues to smoulder away, burning up to six metres below the surface deep in the peat. Fire crews from across the country have been on site assisting Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. Holme Fen is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the variety of wildlife, plants and fungi found across the 657 acres of landscape. The area of destruction caused by the fire extends to 95 acres. A blaze broke out at Holme Fen on August 8 (Image: Emily Stevens) Crew Manager Jake Banks, from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, has been on the scene since the fire broke out. He said: "The conditions in the first seven to eight days were really, really hard. "Six to ten feet below ground, all the peat was well alight and recorded temperatures were up to 1,000 degrees." Exceptionally high temperatures and multiple heatwaves in Cambridgeshire this summer have only added to the pressure on fire crews. Crew Manager Jake Banks has been tackling the wildfire for 12 days (Image: Emily Stevens) Mr Banks said: "Obviously last week was very hot as well - 38 degrees some days here, with huge flames. "This area covers 60 football pitches in total, and then we have to battle that with all that heat and move all the hose around. "We also had the huge risk of 200 foot trees
